How to be filial!

At Home, Be Dutiful to My Parents

入則孝

(1)父母呼。應勿緩。父母命。行勿懶。

          父母教。須敬聽。父母責。須順承。

When my parents call me, I will answer them right away.

When they ask me to do something or instruct me, I will do it quickly.

When my parents teach me, I will listen respectfully.

When my parents reproach me, I will obey and accept their scolding.

I will try hard to change and improve myself, to start anew.

( I need to be humble to do these:) let's do it together! )

Our Parents' love

When I come to this world
I came into this world as a baby. I came out of mum's tummy at the expense of mum's pain.

When mum was pregnant,

- she had the physical reaction of vomiting. Despite so, in order to ensure I have good health, she forced herself to eat good food so that I get the nutrients and grow well (even when she didn't have the appetite) .
- I grew heavier in the stomach of mum everyday. Mum had to carry me everywhere she go. Despite the heaviness, mum protected me and love me for 9 month! (approx. 270 days!) (and until now)
- pregnancy made mum's body ache, dizzy, fatigue, etc. Mum had to sleep uncomfortably. Mum's discomforts really came along with my birth.
-all my bones are build from mum's bone!
There was once when Buddha walked passed some black bones. Buddha bent down and 拜 paid respect to those bones. His students asked him why? and he said: " these bone are a mother's bone as it is black in colour". Mother gave calcium to her child!
生日是母亲受难日!

When mum delivery/gave birth to me,
- before I came out of mum's tummy, mum felt REAL pain. v pain! pain that could not be explain using words.
- In order to bring me into this world: during delivery, mum had to experience blood losses. Not a bit but a pool of blood in order for me to be born.
-Nevertheless, when I was born, mum was just concern whether I was good and healthy. Mum love me so much so that she put her pain aside and forgot the pain of delivery. She just care for me, the newborn baby! Can we not cherish our mum? We have to cherish and love our Mum.

When I grow
When i was a toddler, i fell sick frequently. mum and dad brought me to the doctor even when it was dark at night. Sometimes, it was midnight.
When I cried (like many babies) at night, mum and dad had to take care of me and had their sleep disturbed. When I was small, I learn how to walk. Mum and dad hold my small hand and guided me patiently step by step to walk slowly. Mum and dad took care of me (others maybe taken care by grandparents or aunts, etc). Mum and dad had to feed us with milk whether it's breastfeed or milk powder. If we consume our mum's milk, then we are consuming mum's blood (milk roughly equate blood). I was fed with power as i cannot take my mum's milk. Mum had to ensure I have enough nutrients and always find food that will give me a healthy body.

When i grew older, dad and mum had to help me...grow. I did not know anything and everything had to be taught by my parents (how to brush my teeth, how to wear clothes, how to pack my room, how to go toilet, how to bath, how to eat on my own, how to sweep/mop and clean the house, etc).  Mum had to spend effort to scold, punish and cane me when i do wrong.打在身上痛在娘心!I am very grateful as i learnt my mistakes and remember it so clearly until now. If my mum were to talk nicely to me, i may not remember it so vividly!

When I was a teenager and now young adult, mum worry for me on many matters especially when I am out late. And now, I try not to go out at night/ late at night. My mum is strict on me so I will not learn the bad things and mix with bad friends. I will be a nice person! Mum told me she constantly pray that I will meet good people who will help me. 有贵人相助!Indeed, I meet saints' teachings and Buddhism which give value to life. Do not live for the sake of money, fame, prestige, luxury,etc! We live for the good of mankind (to contribute positively to society). To serve and contribute ourselves to society. Many times, I felt and saw mum inside my room and she cover me with my blanket (while I was almost asleep). Mum knew the food that I love/like but I was not even aware of what mum love (before I met saints' teaching). I made mum really upset when I was rebellious in secondary school. There were many times when I got angry and shout, scream or scold my mum for some reasons. Mum cried! Additionally, I talk to her/dad rudely at times + speak to her meanly at times. I was ignorant of mum's love and did not know how to control my emotions(vent my anger)! Saints' teachings and Buddhism teach me how to better manage my emotions and have inner peace. I rarely get angry now! I repent for the harms I brought to my parents(especially my mum).  I repent for all the wrongs I did! I repent for mistreating my parents(at times) when I was very young!

Dad and mum have to take care of my health, education and give me shelter. Mum has to take care of my many meals, wash my clothes, and too much to mention! She gave me everything at the expense of her youth and beauty. Mum grew older as taking care of me isn't easy and can be very tiring.

Cherish what we have!
To my dearest frienz, please love your parents!
孝顺父母是人生最幸福的事!Happiness comes from being filial to our parents and it is the basis of being a human.

Meaningful Lyrics
I love it, hope you love it too:)

You Raise me up
When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.

There is no life - no life without its hunger;
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;
But when you come and I am filled with wonder,
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.

You raise me up... To more than I can be.

My Learning Text --- DI ZI GUI 《弟子规》How to be a Truly Good person!

This text is saints and sages teachings/wisdom passed down for hundreds and thousands of years.                      The purpose of learning is to be a truly Good person and to truly live a life of happiness!

The gist of the most important teachings are all compiled! IF it is not GOOD, it will not have such a long life and will be thrown away and lost in history. Many times people in history tried to burn huge amount of saints' teaching books. Using tremendous hardship and effort, people did their best to protect and recover them. However, some books are lost but some are recovered fortunately. When we have the chance to receive these precious-passed-down teachings, please my dear frienz, cherish more than anything else. It has been put to test in history.

When you find that some teaching are doubtful and not applicable, do put it aside first and please do not criticize. There are practical application for each teaching and it is being explained in Teacher Cai's speech. I will have my application here in my blog. Mr Cai will explain each and every single teaching of wisdom in the link below(if you are interested). In order to truly explain these teachings, he took many many hours. Please calm your heart and listen patiently. You will be able to benefit greatly, just like how i  did.

《弟子规》 has given me brightness and happiness in my life.
The major purpose of this blog is to show you my reflection after learning saints and sages teachings. :)
All these teachings can be APPLIED into my life.
All stories/incidents in this blog are REAL in my life(i do not create them).

cherish!

Life is precious. Cherish everyday!

31st December 2012

Today I am being scared in my dream, someone passed away, and I don’t know who died. I woke up and somehow I know the message in the dream is telling me to wake up and work hard, as life is so uncertain and unexpected. I can never know when I will leave the world. I should be able to understand life is precious and I should cherish it. I am left with no time to waste.

Promises not to be made lightly.

Be Trustworthy.
《弟子规》--信篇
事非宜 勿轻诺 苟轻诺 进退错

When you are asked to do something that is appropriate or inappropriate (or bad), do not promise lightly. If you promise lightly, you may be wrong either way(fulfilling it or breaking it).

You need to ask yourself whether you have the time, capability and means to truly fulfill that promise (or what you say).

I failed to be a man of my words in some situation (FLAWS) REPENT!

Incident 1:

When I am in JC, after JC2 I went to work in Fairprice NTUC. When those aunties colleagues asked me to continue working on weekend, i said i can beamingly. To them, i had promised to help them and reduce their load during the busy weekends when many people shop in the supermarket. Yes i did say i can work without pondering whether I really can or not! I returned to school and i realized that to work in weekend is far too taxing for me, i will be unable to cope well. I will be neglecting studies at the expense of work! To keep the promise, my studies will be affected as I would have morality class (Chinese values class on Sunday) and work both on Saturday and Sunday. There is no time for studies. On the other hand, i will have to break the promise 'to stay to work' and eat my own words. My final decision was to leave work totally. I knew those senior people were unhappy about it as i broke my promise and go against what i said initially! Promise broken! i felt really guilty about it! I repent for it. i will not do it again.

After some time, I went to work in another company. When my office boss and senior colleagues asked to return and work during my vacation in university, I did not agree directly with a "yes". Instead I simply beam (smile) all the way through. I do not want to break people's heart, I do not want to go against my words! My warehouse boss taught me something. He said: "Never promise because promises are meant to be broken." I will never know what will happen in the future so i do not want to make blank promises and let people down. I change for the better.

Incident 2:

One day, grandmother was being pestered by a debt company and she was very annoyed by the letter saying some person owe $800+. I told grandma that it is better to call and clarify the situation. I called the debt company and told them that the person who owe them money doesn't live in grandma house.The man asked me to help them by reporting the case to police. I just wanna be nice and i agreed without thinking! After I ended the call and told grandma the actions needed. She got angry and did not allow me to do so. She even called the company and scolded the person attending to her. She believed it is none of her business and to tell the police will put her into deep trouble. Despite agreeing to help, given the present situation, i wasn't able to do it. 有余力而力不足。I need to go against my words, sign! I even missed their call and didn't return their missed calls as i do not know how to face the music. I am sorry i cannot help! I knew I shouldn't even agree to help as i was not in the position to report to the police. I felt really guilty about it! I repent on it and will be more alert by not promising lightly in the future. Fulfilling the promise and breaking it is both wrong.

(if you are interested on what happened: the debt company send a debt-collector to continuously pester my grandma and pasted the loan slip on her door. Grandma was furious and made a police call. The police came and took quite some time to settle the whole issue. The person who loan the money is the house's previous owner)

SAINTS TEACHING:
Do not promise lightly! Only promise when you are absolutely certain you can keep it!
Promises are made to be kept not broken.

I will make sure I can keep it before I promise anything!

Saints and sages has so much wisdom. It is the wisdom pass down for decades and i experience it real-life! What can be passed down for hundreds and thousands of years is the gist and the most precious teachings. Cherish!
